Unfortunately, RVs are notorious for water damage if not properly maintained. Roof seams, trim molding, vents, skylights, storage compartments, doors, windows, AC units, and more can all allow water to get into wall and roof supports, where it then begins to eat away at the foundation of your RV. DO I REALLY NEED TO MAINTAIN MY RV SEALS TWICE A YEAR?!
Unfortunately, RV’s do not have the best reputation when it comes to reliability. Understandably so! RV are subjected to extreme conditions year-round. The more they are exposed to the great outdoors, the more wear and tear they endure. Even the best RVs from the best manufacturers experience the same wear and tear, and the secret many manufacturers may not want you to know…most RV’s are made with the same stuff. Take a look at online forums, and it won’t take long for you to find horror stories of RV seals that went bad and caused catastrophic damage to their rig. Even some new RVs out of the shop often come with seals that are not fully ready for the road.
That said…even if you were to buy a brand new RV that is sealed perfectly out of the lot, the sealant applied to it will eventually go bad. They are simply not manufactured to last the lifetime of the RV! The rigors of the road, constant vibrations of the highway, supporting constant loads, and bearing the effects of the sun and weather around it will eventually cause good sealant to dry out, shrink, warp, or stretch away from surfaces. For these reasons, and because of the importance of a good seal, checking your sealant twice a year is vital. This does not mean that you need to do a full reseal every 6 months! What it does mean is that a lot can happen in 6 months, and the more you know about your rig, the better equipped you will be to make sure your investment stays dry and comfortable for whenever you call upon it to do it’s job.
